The ATHE Level Extended 5 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning is a 130-credit Ofqual regulated qualification.

The ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been developed to conform to the requirements of the RQF, to meet the requirements of the education sector and to respond to the needs of schools, colleges and training providers and their teaching/training staff. The content of the qualification and the standards provided within it, directly relate to the Higher Level Standards
for Teaching Assistants, as set by the Department for Education in the UK. The aims of these qualifications are to assist in the professional development of those supporting teaching and learning and working in the role of Teaching Assistants at a higher level. The qualifications will develop knowledge, understanding and the skills needed to improve the quality of support for teaching/training in schools, colleges and other organisations, leading to the maintenance of standards and providing better outcomes for learners. The qualifications aim to
embed improved practice, leading to higher levels of institutional success. The achievement of this qualification by Teaching Assistants will provide assurance to headteachers, teachers, parents and other stakeholders that the member of staff is working to the standards set

This is a core qualification available to existing and interested centres of ATHE.

This qualification is graded at Pass or Fail.

Typical Age

This qualification is designed for learners who are typically aged 20 and above.


For learners who have recently been in education or training the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:

  • a first degree
  • a level 4 qualification
  • achievement of a nationally recognised qualification at level 2 or above in English/literacy and Mathematics/numeracy
  • other equivalent international qualifications
  • relevant experience of working with students/participants in assisting teaching/training


For those whom English is not their first language we recommend the following standards of proficiency in English language skills or an approved equivalent for this qualification:

  • IELTs 5.5
  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2
  • Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 162 or above
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic 42-49

supporting teaching and learning. It will develop knowledge and understanding of the education system, how schools/colleges and other teaching and learning
providers are organised, the role of the organisation and legislative and policy
frameworks. It will also develop knowledge and understanding of different roles
within the organisation.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Teaching AssistantThis unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of the specific roles and
responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant working at a higher level and to
demonstrate the standards required to execute the role effectively. Learners will
also understand the relationships between different professionals working in
education or training.
Human Development and GrowthThis unit aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the main stages of
human development and growth from birth to 19 years and how different aspects of development can affect one another.
Health and Safety and the Well-being of Children and
Young People
his unit aims to equip learners with knowledge and understanding of inclusive
practices and to provide support in providing holistic development to students
with different educational needs.
Supporting Teaching and LearningThis unit aims to equip learners with knowledge, understanding and skills to support teaching and learning activities. It requires the learner to show competence in supporting the planning and preparation of teaching and learning and its delivery in different forms. The learner will also need to provide support in the assessment of students, in setting goals and monitoring progress in achieving them.
Development of Positive Behaviour in StudentsThis unit aims to equip learners with knowledge, understanding and skills
required to manage challenging and inappropriate behaviour of students and to
develop positive behaviour and attitude.
Inclusive Practices in EducationThis unit aims to equip learners with knowledge, understanding and skills
required to support the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people
and to meet their individual needs.
Personal and Professional DevelopmentThis unit aims to develop the learner’s understanding of the importance of
personal and professional development and improve confidence in assessing own
personal and professional skills. This leads to planning personal and professional
development and engaging in activities to achieve career goals.
